Top 5 Beauty Idols

Generally, I don't have many celebrities that I idolize. There are a few who I think have done great things in their career, but there's really nobody I want to model my life after. Model my personal style after - now that's a different story!

The topic of today's blog entry is my Top 5 Beauty Idols. Basically, women whose style I envy and occasionally try to emulate. I am going to run through my list in reverse order - you'll have to read the entire post to see who I give top billing!

5. TIED: Christina Hendricks and Hilary Duff

Why?

For Christina, it's as simple as me loving the character she plans on Mad Men, Joan Halloway. She's pretty, poised, and real. I like that!

Hilary is a different story. I was never ever a fan of her work growing up - but I think she's matured well and really come into her own. I like her uber relaxed but trendy style. She always looks slightly disheveled but always well put together.

4. Queen Latifah

Why?

The Queen is a music icon, and she knows it. I also like the fact that she is confident in who she is, and makes sure everyone knows it. When you're a bigger girl like me, women like Queen Latifah show you that you can be successful in life and your career regardless of your shape. She gives you faith that looking different doesn't mean you are not as talented or more so than your 'normal sized' counterparts.

3. Lady Gaga

Why?

I am a big fan of Lady Gaga's (a.k.a Stefani Germanotta) music, and the causes she supports. I like the fact that she is unapologetically unique, creative, and has such huge respect for her fans. She's a woman with a killer work-ethic, and commitment to delivering quality product for her fans. I also love her take on fashion, and her Art-fabulous makeup. She looks like a walking painting/piece of art most of the time - the art geek in me loves it!

2. Angelina Jolie

Why?

Angie is my favorite actress. I first discovered her in Girl, Interrupted - the movie that got her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1999. The honesty and openness in the way she lives her life, in the face of judgment and criticism amazes me. I certainly don't have the confidence to be like that all of the time. She's an actress who seems to always look pretty, regardless of whether or not she is wearing makeup. The fact she looks fabulous in only eyeliner, mascara and lipstick makes me jealous!

1. Julie Newmar

Why?

For awhile, Julie shared the top spot with Doris Day, another one of my favorite actresses. Julie is an old-school bombshell who started her career in musicals and is featured in one of my favorites: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (she plays Dorcas, and is billed as Julie Newmayer - her birth name!). She also has a brief cameo in another fave movie of mine: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo in drag? Hell yes!). Julie is a classic beauty, and talented to boot. That's why she gets the No. 1 spot! Fun Fact: She also played Cat Woman in the original Batman TV show from the sixties.
