What you need:
- A hair dryer, with a high setting
- Sterilized small containers
- A NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil
- A pair of pliers
- A towel (one that can be stained)
* You may also need something to hold your container in place/down, if your hair dryer is very strong and blows your small container around. I used a slightly larger container to contain it and stop it from moving around.
1. Using your pliers, twist off the white plastic cap at the top of the pencil:
2. Plug in your hair dryer and make sure it's ready to use; set it aside close to you.
3. Get your container ready (set it up so that it doesn't blow it away). Using your pliers, get a good grip on the pencil. A good spot to grip the pencil is right below the ridge where the white cap came off. Be careful not to squeeze the pencil! Position your pencil over the container. Your setup should look something like this:
4. In your free hand, grab your hair dryer and turn it on, on high. Position the hair dryer so it is blowing down on the opening at the top of the pencil. If you are squeezing your pencil, you may see the contents of the pencil start to come out the top; if that happens, loosen your grip on the pliers.
Gradually, the heat from the hair dryer will heat up the cream inside the pencil. It will start to drip out of the tip of the pencil and into your container. I find if you hold the pencil as close as you can to the bottom of the pan, the less spatter gets blown around. You can also move the hair dryer around and blow at the sides of the pencil - I do this, to ensure the entire pencil is getting warm and that the cream can slide out more easily.
It takes about five minutes for the pencil to get completely warm; then you will see a lot of the eye pencil cream come out quickly. You will know that the pencil is empty when you can see through the pencil itself.
5. Turn off the hair dryer. Let go of the pencil with the pliers, and set the pliers aside. BE CAREFUL not to touch any metal parts of the pliers - they are hot and you will burn yourself. If you used a metal pan like me, that will also be hot. You may want to use the pliers to pick it up and move it to another spot to cool.
6. Let your newly de-potted pan of cream eyeshadow cool completely, for 5 - 10 minutes. When it's cool, you can put the lid on the container and put a label on it so you know what color it is. The cream eye shadow will not have been effected by the heat at all; it re-sets itself.
Here's what they look like:
You will be able to use this cream eye shadow like a MAC Paint Pot or MUFE Aqua Cream.
There is also a heat-free option to de-potting these pencils. I will cover that next week!
Have a great week!
